What's up dog?
I work as a Shop manager for a gift store in Russell, the Bay of Islands, and my dog Pepper comes to work with me. She often lies outside at the door, greeting customers when they come in, or actually, enticing people to come in. The amount of pets she gets in return, and smiles on customers faces, is unbelievable! She'll often follow people in, drop herself in front of them being patted. I often find kids sprawled on the ground next to her while the parents are shopping, not wanting to leave. Best times are when we get visitors in who are missing their own dogs and other animals badly, and are just so happy to shower Pepper with their love instead for just a moment. For me I love my customers sharing their stories about their dogs, happy and sad. A lot of locals of course also know Pepper. And often pop in to say hi, to Pepper first ! Local kids come in to give her a treat, which Pepper doesn't mind at all! New kids who are a bit wary, we are happy to show how to give a treat and be around a dog. My colleagues and boss - who admitted to normally not being a dog person - love her. And Pepper loves them in return, yelping when she sees them because they are part of her pack. I notice both colleagues, locals, visitors coming in for an extra cuddle from Pepper when they are having it tough... and Pepper is so, so happy to oblige. When Pepper happens to have a day off, and I am working, not only I miss having her around. The question 'where is Pepper?' is what I will hear all day.... She is such a big part of the shop, and I am so proud of her, how she moves around, is gentle, doesn't run off, naps, greets and chills... She is a rescue dog from the local BOI animals rescue, and I will tell anybody who wants to know how great a rescue dog she is. She is their best ambassador... of course we have our daily routine in town too with toilet breaks and walks, and she ll know the best places to go to for a coffee for me and a treat for her!! Which she so deserves!!
